Orchha

Orchha or Urchha, is a beautiful medieval town, which is located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. This town was founded by Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh, Bundela Chief, in 1501. He also constructed a few temples and forts also during his reign. This town is placed on the banks of River Betwa. A well-known tourist destination in Madhya Pradesh state, it is also one of the most popular weekend getaways from Delhi.

The nearest railway station from Orchha is Jhansi railway station, which is located at a distance of 16 km. Placed on the prime rail route, Jhansi receives regular direct trains from Delhi. Once you are at Jhansi railway station, you can hire a taxi to Orchha, which may cost around INR 350.

The nearest airport to Orchha is Gwalior airport, which is around 116 km away. Flight services are available to and from Delhi to Gwalior. You can hire a taxi once at the Gwalior airport, which may cost around INR 2500 to go to Orchha.

Orchha is well-connected to Delhi, by road. the best option would be rent a private taxi to visit Orchha. But, there is an option of private and government-run buses. You can also opt for Deluxe and tourist A/C bus.

Chandrashekhar Azad, Shahid Smarak was built in the memory of Chandrashekhar Azad, the great freedom fighter. Inaugurated in 1984, this memorial, a prime attraction, consists of a full-size bronze statue of Chandra Shekhar Azad.

Beautifully placed on the banks of the river Betwa, these Chhatris or Royal Cenotaphs are quite popular as a tourist attraction, which look quite enchanting. These royal structures are built in the glory of Bundela rulers, on an elevated pedestal with the support of the pillars.

Dauji-ki-haveli, a miniature version of a royal palace, it is one of the most well-preserved mansions. This beautiful ornamented Haveli houses an amazing collection of centuries-old mural paintings.

Raja Mahal was the residence of the erstwhile rulers of Orchha, which was erected in the 17th century. This palace boasts of striking decorative towers in the exterior and mural paintings in the interiors.

Placed in the fort complex, Rani Mahal has a unique architecture and décor that has some lovely paintings. It was the residence of the Queen of Raja Madhukar Shah. Her room consists of beautiful paintings from the great Hindu epic, Ramayana.

Laxmi Narayan Temple is a beautiful mix of fort and temple architecture, which makes it a unique structure. The décor of the temple consists of mural paintings of mythological themes.
