Dharamshala

Labeled as ‘The Little Lhasa of India’,Dharamshala is the holy abode of the Tibetan charismatic leader ‘Dalai Lama’ and houses the Tibetan government in exile. It is the headquarters of the Kangra district and set against the picturesque backdrop of Dhauladhar mountain range. The beautiful city is divided as the Upper Dharamshala and Lower Dharamshala.

The nearest railway station to Dharamshala is Kangra Mandir. It is located at a distance of 22 kilometers from Dharamshala. However, the major railway junction is Pathankot, which is located around 85 kilometers away from Dharamshala.

The nearest airport to Dharamshala is Amritsar and later, one can take a taxi to reach Dharamshala.

Dharamshala is well-connected to Delhi via regular services. State government and private Volvo buses are available from Delhi (520 kilometers).

Located on the Naddi Road, 2 kilometers westward from Mcleodganj market, Dal Lake is counted among the most picturesque spots in Dharamshala. It is perched at a height of 1775 meters. There is a Shiva temple located by the banks of Dal Lake. The annual fair conducted every year in reverence of Lord Shiva, in September, is a great attraction for tourists. It is also a base camp for trekkers in Dharamshala and Mcleodganj.

The personal monastery of Tibetan Buddhist leader, Dalai Lama, Namgyal Monastery is located within the Tsuglagkhang Monastery, which also enfolds a Tibetan Museum, a cafeteria, a book shop and Buddhist shrines. The monastery also offers comprehensive courses in Tibetan secret sutra and tantra typical. The prospectus is quite strict and young monks gain entrance after they crack through the rigorous series of entrance tests.

Also meaning ‘Jewel Garden’ in Tibetan language, Norbulingka Monastery has preserved the Tibetan culture and values for generation to come. The monastery was founded by Kelsang and Kim Yeshi in 1988. The institute offers free guided tours and workshops explaining Tibetan art.

Located 11 kilometers away from Dharamshala, Bhagsunag Falls is a major stopover for trekkers on the way to Triund. The waterfall has a humble presence throughout the year. Around 0.5 kilometers away from the waterfall, you can visit the Bhagsunath Temple which is revered by devotees from all over the world.

It commemorates the ultimate sacrifice done by the war heroes. The memorial imbibes a patriotic feel and serves as the right place to pay homage to soldiers. The inscriptions on the memorial were carved in 1046. This landmark is surrounded by scenic landscape, towering hills, scenic ambience and a café.

Kotwali Bazaar and Mcleodganj are the two primary shopping areas of Dharamshala. Other markets include Tibetan handicrafts, paintings, jewelry, carpets and woodcraft typical to this culture. Here you can shop for local pickles and jams. Other popular shopping spots include Tibetan Quality Shops, Norsang Handicrafts and TCV Handicrafts.
